Toward the end of the 1940s, Frank Coggins was responsible for a great deal of development within the 700-acre community called Berkeley Lake Properties. Home to one of Georgia’s largest earthen dams, the city of Berkeley Lake derives its name from the 88-acre Lake Berkeley. The subdivision of Berkeley Lake Estates was laid out in the 1950s, was later sold and was used primarily as a summer retreat for several years. It had an array of charming fishing cottages but throughout the years more and more permanent residences were added. In 1953 the Lake Berkeley Civic Association was formed and in 1956 the City of Berkeley Lake became an official municipality in Gwinnett County.

This remarkable master-planned community has added five new neighborhoods since 1994. Today, almost all of the land within the city limits has been developed, with only two tracts remaining. All of the subdivisions found within Berkeley Lake are great places to buy a home because the community at large is so spectacular. In 2017 Berkeley Lake was named the 9th Best Suburb in the state, in addition to receiving an A+ rating for family-friendliness.
